carpeted stairs have to go!!!

Postby gmwalley » August 5th, 2016, 1:02 pm

On my 1994 Carver 370 aft cabin, the main salon stairs as well as stairs down to galley and back to aft cabin were all carpeted. The main staircase had a cheesy plastic runner "protecting" the carpet. After a couple of near catastrophic slips, the carpet has got to go. I'm in the home stretch of the improved tread replacement. I took about an inch off the edge of the plywood stair treads and glued / screwed 1" wide bull nose teak edging. I installed it so it was ~5mm proud of the old tread. I then ordered a sheet of Seadeck material to cut and fit into the recess. Got it all done except the very top main salon tread ( have to make a complicated template for that one). Also had to use some body filler to level off an area around transition between the fiberglass and the top stair tread. So far I'm liking it much better, there is now visual contrast between the tread and the edge of the tread, much easier to see the edges of the tread. Old blue carpet was all on color an made it difficult to navigate in dim light. Also replaced the cheesy rope light with something better (and LED based) [https://www.amazon.com/Voltage-Waterproof-Outdoor-Stairs-Landscape/dp/B015J2HYV6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1470416417&sr=8-3&keywords=led+stair+lights]
Will post pictures of final results soon!

That's a much cleaner appearance and certainly better traction. Time will tell how well it holds up.

Beautiful job. Hope to do the same thing to ours one of these days. The lights you used.......would they work as a good replacement to factory step light? We bought a 93 350 AC last August and the PO changed bulbs to led, but half the lenses are missing. Had read another thread where someone tried to change the courtesy lighting and had a problem with how the wiring was different from old to new in regards to placement, and existing access/mounting holes. Again, great job.

Gr8 Job! Very Professional. Yes Rich, pattern old lights before buying new ones and check with supplier if they match before you buy. I bought the same manufacture style lights from the original manufacture and they did not match at all. Mike

Hello all, anyone interested in the original perko courtesy light ss fixtures, I have seven available. I recentely swapped all for different led lights and have the two half units. I tried to find a led buld replacement for the unit but was unsuccessful. You can call me at 203-231-2164(cell) or email at grogliano@gmail.com. I can send pictures for anyone interested. Be well, guy
