Vessel Info: I have a 1988 Carver Mariner twin 220hp with 600hrs. I'm interested in how to access the shaft seals/ packings on this vessel. The design of the boat is such you can see the packing adjustment bolts but accessing them with a wrench looks nearly impossible. The only way I see it becoming possible is if I remove the V drives and I'm hoping I don't have to do that! I'm looking for someone who has experienced this issue with this model of boat. My boat does not have a aft cabin so that my answer one question.
Thanks for any feedback

adjustment/maintenance shaft packing

Postby Jerry Moder » January 19th, 2023, 3:24 pm

I have a 1988 Carver Mariner with twin 220hp. My boat does not have an aft cabin. My question is I'm looking for someone who has experienced adjusting or adding rounds of packing to the shaft seals. The design of the Mariner is such you can see the shaft and packing adjustment bolts via small floor access covers under the couch and dinette seat, but accessing them is nearly impossible. The only way I see to make any adjustments to the packing is by removing the V drives. There is just no room for wrenches especially on the port side. Has anyone out there ever owned a Mariner and has made this adjustment?
Need help and advise!
