By all means, pull the out drive and put a new fresh water impeller in it and save all the hard work you already did to this point. Mike

Have not started it yet. just got and original 1973 OMC service manual off ebay. now a little bit of reading. ran in to a guy who has the same drive on his boat and he gave me and hose adaptor off an old drive he had laying around. So if I use this adaptor will the presser from the hose be sufficient to try to run the engine. Then I can change the impeller after I get better acquainted with the drive.
Also having a hard time finding a Binnacle mount shift assy. Any one have a spare.

Hook it up and turn it on and see if the water will go thru the cooling system and come out the exhaust at a good rate. If it looks good to you, try running it at idle for a little while, noting manifold temps. But replace that impeller very soon if not right now.

I believe the hose will give you enough water to idle with a bad impeller UNLESS the impeller parts are blocking the passageways. Also check the drive for lube. The top end spins even in neutral.

have not had time to work on it further but when I was vacationing 2wks ago in the upper Michigan Keweenaw peninsula I call around to boat places and I found a guy that had the Binnacle shiftier assembly I was missing. He gave me really good deal. I was given a adapter plate for a garden hose to be able to run out of the water but one of the mount bolts is broken off in the housing and i will need to drill it out before I can remount the new adapter.

Drill slowly and gently into the cast aluminum. It's not very forgiving. Let us know when she comes to life.

I'm back,
Fired her up last weekend with no trouble at all. sounds great and no smoke. worked on and checked out all the systems and have them all up and running. Took a garden hose and filled the bilge with water to check the bilge pump (pumps great). this Saturday (11/5/16) with a help of my good buddy we are going to launch her in Lake Geneva for a shakedown. Got her insured just incase things don't go so well.
