Always been less than satisfied with the main cabin mattress. Too narrow / too short (I'm 6'3", 240#), was layered with loose foam sheets from previous owner, also had that 'boat smell'. Plan is to shop for a custom mattress at HMC showroom near Cleveland OH while visiting the new grand-baby. I took the old plywood platform sections home and fabricated new pieces resulting in 6" wider at the shoulders and 4" wider at the foot and 4" longer overall. All that is left is to fabricate and install Aluminum molding / lip to hold the new mattress in place. Made a template of the new footprint to take to the mattress folks.
One issue we always had even before the modification was the hanging locker doors ran into the bed before the door was open all the way. Took the doors home / split them vertically, installed piano hinges after some teak edge banding on the raw edge. Now we have bi-fold doors that clear the bed and give better access to the hanging locker. I'll post picture when I have a chance - turned out pretty good.

finally got some pictures - REALLY hard to take a picture in the small aft cabin confined (even with a 17MM lens!)

Got the new mattress on the boat this past weekend - WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Expensive but worth every penny! Got the version from HMC with inner springs + gel foam top, plus custom mattress pad and fitted sheets. Haven't slept on it yet, just lounged a little, looking forward to cooler weather and first night on anchor as soon as wife's new knee lets her navigate the companionways.

When you say expensive what does that mean......lots of 100's or a couple of 1000s?
Thinking we might want to do a new mattress in ours.

We got inner spring, memory foam, custom mattress pad, custom sheets all for about $4700. Mattress alone was $3750 +$150 shipping to North Alabama. I know - OUCH! but I'm getting too old and creaky not to have a comfortable bed. We made a considered decision we were going to keep this particular boat for at least 8- 10 more years and use it heavily and so went with top of the line solution from HMC. We ordered it through 'Fresh Water Gills' in Cleveland OH. Combining a visit to newest grand-baby with a trip to try the different options in their showroom.
