Ok, I think my 350 Mariner is in need of some new carpet inside. I’m thinking of simply doing some good stain master carpet and be done. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Any big reason I should spend the big bucks on marine carpet?

No reason whatsoever to do marine carpet unless it is exposed to the elements such as cockpit carpeting. I simply used a very high quality home carpet in Midnightsun.

I, too, am considering re-carpeting. My current carpeting in my Santego is bound or whipped on the edges to keep it from fraying and is installed more like a rug. This keeps it removable and able to provide access to hatches that are underneath the carpeting. I would prefer to keep things this way vs. gluing it down. Has anyone had any experience in having the whipping applied to a home quality carpet?

I would think most any good carpet places down your way can get it bound for you, quite common. We have had home area rugs made like that for years.

I second that, about any carpet place should be able to bind it. Installing snaps would be.... well.... a snap as well. In my case I’ll be gluing it down. But have to admit, like the removable idea.

Check the specs on the carpet - you don't want something that will mildew or hold moisture. You want backing and pile to be all-synthetic - like nylon or poly.

That’s a great point... most of the carpet I’m looking at does not say “mildew resistant” but almost all are vinyl or some sort of man made material. So I’m assuming I’ll be ok.

Nothing wrong with going non-marine in interior surfaces unless you have a bunch of younglings that'll be trekking in and out with wet feet and swimwear.

Have you checked how your current carpet is laid? If it's glued down and you plan on gluing the new carpet, consider the glue you apply, you want it to be compatible with the glue that's already there otherwise it might separate in short time unless you remove all the old stuff, which is APITA. One of the members who've had success with this might recommend a glue that's still holding up for them after a few years.

Oh man! I did not even THINK of the glue part! So I’m assuming it’s glued, but how do I determine what type it is?
