Spark plug wires not matching up to diagram

So attached is the original manual firing order and dist cap wiring diagram. I decided to finally number my wires and they are nowhere near what the manual says. Not having any issues but, when I do, this may cause a problem. I.E., the #1 wire is the 3rd cylinder from the rear of the engine on the starboard side if your facing the fly wheel. None of the other wires seem to match up to the diagram either. What would be the reason?

A question.....how did you decide which was #1 if they were not identified ? #1 on the cap could have been wired anywhere depending on how the distributor was reinstalled at some point, now not necessarily as the drawing shows the cap and wires.

What rotation engine do you have ?

So the distributor cap has the #1 wire marked and I traced it back. The stbd is counterclockwise and port is clockwise. Im working on the stbd right now.

As Bud said, the #1 wire can be anywhere on the distributor cap in spite of what the cap says, it really depends on how the distributor was installed. As long as the rest of the wires going to each cylinder follow the proper firing order after the number one wire position, it'll still work properly. Having #1 marked on the cap is a good reference but it doesn't always get set up that way because it doesn't really matter what post you start at once the distributor is installed with the #1 cylinder at TDC of it's compression stroke. Which ever post your rotor is pointing to at that time will be your #1 cylinder wire post. Installing the distributor so the rotor points to the post marked #1 on the cap just takes a little more effort is all, so some guys don't bother.

Appreciate it. Makes sense that my timing was off. I had the timing light hooked up to the wire marked #1 but must have been #7. Thanks again.

Just remember, the cylinders are in the block, not in the distributor. So you always put the timing light on the #1 cylinder in the block, which in your engine would be the right-front. Always. (some engines - like GM - are usually 'left-front")

THEN you can trace that wire back to the distributor to tell which post on the distributor corresponds to #1.

You can check distributor alignment by putting the crankshaft at (or slightly before) TDC for #1 and then pop the dist cap off and see which way the rotor is pointing. It should be at the post where the #1 spark plug is connected.

Appreciate everyones reply. I would have thought if itms marked "1", it would be connected to the #1 cylinder but, guess not.

Now my advice would be to mark all your wires the way they are now for future reference, take your time to get right....masking tape or that label maker you have been dying to try out ... :-D

Tip.... Don't mark any wires or boots directly with magic markers/ sharpies....they can conduct electricity and lead to problems.

#1 cylinder is the one that's farthest forward on the end of the block with the crank pulley, whether it's a GM of Ford. Ford cylinders are numbered 1-2-3-4 on one bank and 5-6-7-8 on the other. The firing order should be cast into the top of the intake manifold.

If you removed the plugs/wires/cap and then rotated the crank, you'll need to find TDC for #1- look on YouTube for videos on how to do this without buying a timing disc.
