Just Purchased a Carver

Hi all. I am new to Carver boats having just purchased a 1986 2757 Montego. I have some work to do on it, but its generally sound. I have heard horror stories about the Merc 190 engines, but the previous owner and the marina that services the boat told me that the engines were in good running order and do not have the coolant or charging issues I have heard about. It will be in the water at the end of the weekend and I am hoping to enjoy it with my family. If anyone has advice about this particular boat, I would be happy to hear it.

The "horror" of those engines is the cost and availability of parts, as they haven't been made since the late 80's or very early 90's.
They actually run pretty well.

Congrats and welcome aboard. Good luck with the 190s.

If they don't have alternators, look into conversion kits, I believe they may still be available. If you're proactive with this, you'll save yourself a huge headache and expense trying to find replacement parts when the charging system fails, if you're lucky enough to find them, especially the water cooled regulator.

I trust you inspected the transom assembly components? Is your location in NY salt water or fresh water?

Transom assembly is good and it has been on the Hudson River its entire life, so brackish water.
