Looking at a 1986 4207

Postby bobwhorn » February 19th, 2023, 11:14 am

Are there any particular issues to look at? It has the Mercruiser 350s.
Thanks,
Bob

If they're really 350's then I'd consider that VERY undersized for that boat. Perhaps it's 350HP? Even still, that'd be borderline unless you're just going to use the boat as a trawler.

I had a pair of 454CI 350HP engines (Crusaders) in a 36'er and, while the performance was good, I would not have wanted anything smaller.

There is a big label on the engine "350". We're coming from sailboats so trawler speed is just fine. Mostly going to be a "dock queen" to get out of the house for a while and hang out in the marina. Some short trips around Galveston Bay and maybe short trips along the ICW.

I'm assuming the label means it's 350CID not 350HP. Is that correct?

I can't see them putting 350CID in a boat that size. You're sure they're Mercs? They're black?

That would be Crusader and most likely 454 CID, 350HP

Yea, the Crusaders were all blue (at least that vintage) and the ones with the big "350" sticker meant 350HP. I had the same ones. Take some pics of the engines and post them, but you could always search some images for "350 Crusader" and likely find some that look exactly like what you were seeing.

Even though many came stock with that, those boats really needed some diesels. All depends on what you want to do with the boat though!

I think they will do just fine for us. We did our long distance cruising in the early 20s, lived aboard a sailboat for 6-7 years and cruised up and down the East Coast, Bahamas, Virgin Islands and beyond. I think that is behind us, fun when we were in our sixties.
The STBD engine has "allegedly" been rebuilt. The hour meter reads 1100+, maybe it rolled over and it really is 11,100+? Port engine not running, hour meter reads 8800+ hours. Problem unknown.
