Tomorrow going to view a 2007 Voyager 52 Volvo D-9s. 2500 hours. records for the last 5 years. New turbos in 2023. Boat has been in charter for at least last 3 years. Aftercoolers and heat exchangers serviced June 2025.
I'm used to Cummins 6CTA8.3 and some what suspicious of Volvo. I m in Seattle so is boat.
Any comments on reliability of D-9s , maintenance and repair issues, ?
Recommendations for a really good Volvo Mechanic/engineer in this area?

Welcome aboard. Nothing really stands out to me with Volvo D series engines that you wouldn't have to worry about with any other brand. Be especially careful with engine oil levels, always keep it just below the full mark or you run the risk of blowing seals but again that could happen with any brand, it just stands out a little more for me with Volvos. As with any engine, regular maintenance is key here, and use quality parts. It also helps to ensure there is a local Volvo Penta dealer in the area you can rely on.

If the vessel has QL thrusters (Volvo), they were discontinued years ago and parts are no longer available from Volvo. A major component failure will be costly if you can even find a replacement part somewhere, otherwise you'll be retrofitting the whole system to a different brand ($$$), so that's something to consider budgeting for.

Thank you Viper. Great advice. I didn't know about the Thrusters. Really Helpful. Broker cancelled my appointment due to boat show set up,. Now tomorrow. Will post when I know something.

Welcome to the forum.....considering the charter comment , I believe you will but I will mention anyway to get a complete engine survey. Hopefully you can find a good qualified Volvo mechanic in your area who can be present on the sea trial if it gets to that.

I would recommend contacting Pacific Power Group in Seattle and have them survey the boat rather than relying on your typical mechanical surveyo. They service all models of Volvos in the area and have sharp service techs. They have a booth at the Boat Show this week as well if you want to go talk to them. $200/hr and $200 for travel.
