Marina Contracts?

Source of the post Marina worked on the out drives and installed a new shifter that required getting into the drives to adjust cables to accommodate the new shifters. When the boat was launched the day in question, there was a lot of oil sheen around the back of the boat. Boat owner notified mechanic, mechanic told boat owner it was residual oil not to worry. A time later when boat owner was still have trouble shifting his boat he took it to another mechanic who in turn called a Volvo Penta Tech. Tech found that both outdrives were full of water and no oils. both bearings in the engine bell housings were washed and bad.

Good grief , what a mess, looks like maybe the stooges are in fact alive and well and working there....

Are these perhaps the Volvo composite drives? They were a great idea, but with any engine with more torque than a 4.3 they will actually open up, let oil out and water in. They may have been full of water before the "stooges" in question worked on them. That doesn't dismiss the fact that a competent mechanic would have or should have checked the drive oil before closing out the repair ticket.

I don't know about the conditions up there in the great white north, but down here it seems that starting with the 2008 recession, most of the good mechanics moved to Florida where the money is. We had many marinas / dealers that could pay these guys top dollar year round when they were selling a lot of new boats and had warranty work to help them subsidize their pay. Now, no one down here is stocking new boats over about 30' so the big warranty dollars are gone.
The Marina I bought my latest (used) boat from was a Carver, Navigator and Larson dealer for years. Sold more Carvers than anyone else on the east coast for many years. They now sell zero new boats. They used to have 23 full time techs, not including fiberglass and canvas persons. They now have 2 techs and no fiberglass or canvas persons. A lot of money left when the new boats left.......

Everything in the drives have to gone through and most likely totally rebuilt.
