I am buying a 2006 Carver 46MY, I want 2 chartplotters which I have on my trade in, currently the 46 has a Raymarine C120. I have been told I can't install a new unit to work with the C120 due to the age, I was advised to install a new Raymarine with built in GPS and this unit will work independently with no wiring other than power. Does anyone have experience with this unit with built in GPS?

thanks
Dave

Crates Lake Country is buying our 41 Carver CMY, you know where to find it, we are moving the new to us boat to Starport Simcoe, we love it there, maybe we will see you at Beacon Bay in the spring while we are preparing the 46

The C120 is a pretty good unit. You can find accessories on eBay and they won't cost a lot of money. Also you avoid the hassle of new wiring and fitting for a unit that is probably a different size. The C120 units are popular enough to have a dedicated web site for C120 units: http://raymarinec120.com

Yes, the C120 is no longer made, but any electronics you buy are obsolete the day after you buy it. That's how those companies stay in business. A friend of mine just paid $20K for a full update on the electronics for his Contender - gave the old stuff to the installer (including twin Garmin 741 units, radar, ducers, etc.) - who sold them on eBay.

Look at what you've got, check with some experts, and decide on your best path. :captain2:

Congrats Dave on the new boat.

We were at Starport Simcoe for 10 years and just left in the spring of 15.

Last year I purchased the Raymarine A78 with built in GPS, and I love the unit!
Took me about 20 minutes to install and everything works like a charm.
I also installed the sonar, and radar to a little longer for those.
My unit has built in WIFI so I can connect my iPad or iPhone to it and view it remotely, and even control it..

I just use Open CPN (free download). $35 for the gps receiver and my own laptop. That may (or may not) work for you.
