Boating Friends

We all meet new acquaintances in the boating community thru our travels, some we like and some not so much. I wanted to share a brief story of a friend we made while at the Charleston City Boatyard in Charleston, SC during recent work. My wife referred to him as her little Red Head, but we later learned his true identity was "Cowboy". We first observed him cruising through the boatyard heading back from the direction of the Wando River ringing wet and muddy paws. That's right, Paws! Cowboy was a local resident who we had no idea who he belonged to. The workers in the yard all new him and he delighted in following them until another job required his attention and he would move on often taking frequent dips to refresh his wetness. He didn't really want anything but your friendship and was on the job every day and even at night. One night we drove back to the yard after dinner and when my wife opened her door, their was Cowboy waiting to escort us to our boat. Once completed, he was gone again. We offered him cool water and some treats through the week while he remained watchful as I worked on my boat. The workers told us that he swam across a creek behind the facility every morning for as long as they can remember to come over for the day. They also said that creek was known to have gators and they worried for him, but that never stopped Cowboy from his appointed rounds and only proved his bravery. So if your ever at the City Boatyard, ask for Cowboy, chances are that he will find you first!
