1987 carver electrical problem

When I am connected to shore power everything works great but when I disconnect and try to run the generator only the air conditioning will work. The outlets and refrigerator have no power at all. Seems like the electrical system is split when I'm on the gen. Any ideas of what it could be and how to fix it?

I am pretty sure the problem is with the automatic switch over relays.

I'm assuming you have two shore power lines. Is there a switch or breaker at the panel that combines lines "1" and "2" ?
When you turn on the generator, do you have to switch from "Shore" to "Ship" or does it switch over automatically? If it switches over automatically, it should be switching both lines/legs. If it doesn't, there's an problem with the power relay. Have you tried cycling the shore power breaker for line one on and off?

I have a 30 amp system with 2 shore power plugs. 1 for AC and the other for the receptacles and refridgerator. Everything is fine until I turn on the generator. I plugged in shore power and then turned it all on disconnected and still had the same problem.

It would help us determine the problem if you answer the first two questions!

Also, is this boat new to you?

Yes I have 2 shore power lines. There are two breakers, one that controls just the air conditioning and one that controls the outlets refridgerator, range and water heater. Nothing that combines 1 and 2. I'm not new to the boat. I owned this one for about 4 years

Check the relays.
Take the cover off. Be very careful. Line voltage in there.
Plug both cords in.
Have somebody start the genny. Watch the relays.
Do you know how to use a vom?
Check voltage to the two ac voltage mains.

At the relays, the two incoming cords go to them.
The genset goes to them. Yes, when on genset the two combine automatically.
One of the relays is not letting genset current through.
Or you have a bad connection at the non-air conditioning relay on the genset side.

Where are the relays typically located?

Starboard side, cabin dinette seating, aft wall, lift up the bottom cushion, open the compartment cover. Black box with a number of screws on top.

If not there, then a much more difficult place is in the sink cabinet.
Best way to get to it is remove the sink. My buddy's Mariner had his there.

In that location my Mariner has the hvac water pump controls.
