Cruising costs

Postby pepmyster » July 9th, 2019, 6:05 am

Just a little calculation.
2004 360ss, 2x 8.1 VP's
50 hours, 302 liters used (80 US gallons).
Cost= $412 Canadian.
=$1.36 a liter.
6.04 liters per hour , equals, $8.21 per hour to putt around in this boat.
This boat is cheaper to run than my other boat, a Rinker 280ec with 1 x 8.1 Merc.
Wow.......

Oddly enough I used to be a 32mph guy yet now its 11-13 kph on auto pilot. So much more relaxing and time to take in the scenery. Love this new way of navigating.

I believe that one of the great advantages of the Carver design is the fact that you can be very economical when taking your time and enjoying the scenery, yet if necessary, get where you have to go in a hurry. I am very pleased with my 'combo' burn rate. We must remember that we are moving around at least 9 tons of boat.

I feel it is worth every penny spent. So, damn the cost and full speed ahead. The experiences are priceless.

I also WAS one of the 35MPH group. When I bought the Carver, it was with a little trepidation, knowing I would drop to the low 20's. Being a little older and a tiny bit wiser, I found out that speed and bouncing is not fun. Our Carver cuts along at 18 to 20 mph at 3000 to 3100RPM, rides like a dream boat, and burns 17GPH. I get to my 6 favorite destinations about 10 min later than I used to, but so what? It's 10 min more of comfy cruising. If I need the power to beat a storm, it is there. Perfect balance for me. LOVE THOSE CRUSADERS! 8-) er

Pepmyster do you mind taking a look at this website for your engines? And the VP 8.1. I was trying to understand your great fuel economy. I do alot of hull speed around the lake too but I'm easily burning more than 2-3 gallons / engine an hour with my crusaders on my 405. It would appear your just running past idle rpm? At a bit more than 1.6 gallon per hour? Total or per engine. Thanks

I know!!!!!! Did 50hrs with 302 liters. Idle speed or just around 1000rpm. I too am amazed at it. Put both tanks full and than checked my hours for total costs. I also rechecked the math. I mean, I could make a mistake. Gassed up at the same place, same-style of fill-up etc.
