BoatUS - Not what it appears to be!

As a Unlimited Gold Member, I recently contacted BoatUS for the first time for a tow. Yes it happens to everyone sometime. This tow was for a haul out and repair, and was from my home dock to a boat yard approximately 5 miles away. My Carver was disabled but not in peril, and was in need of some work covered through my insurer. The BoatUS Service Agreement states in part " Unlimited Gold Service Level, Paid Service includes payment of the cost to tow Member's disabled boat, for the purpose of repairs, from any dock or mooring to the Members port of choice not to exceed a total towing distance of 25 miles." Upon first contact many days in advance, I was advised to call for the tow a day in advance and after discussing my needs, I was told that I was completely covered for the service as an Unlimited Gold Member.

When ready I contacted BoatUS again allowing about 4 days out to schedule and coordinate with the boat Yard, tides, etc. During that contact, I was asked if the reason for the tow involved insurance, to which I acknowledged that the repairs were covered through my insurance. I was then asked if I was insured through BoatUS - Geico. My response was no that I have alternative insurance coverage. The BoatUS representative then explained that BoatUS would not cover my tow expenses but would however provide a TowBoat U.S Captain to tow my vessel noting that I would have to pay (Est. $750.00) out of pocket upon their arrival on the scheduled date. When asked why I would be forced to pay when I have been a covered member for years. I was told because I was not insured through BoatUS - Geico, and insurance was involved. I advised them that one had nothing to due with the other, and cited their own agreement terms (Noted Above) with the representative. It did not matter. I even called a third time to verify and was told the same thing.

It appears that if I had called for the tow before I contacted my insurer, BoatUS would have covered the tow and probably tried to sell me their insurance. My point is, BoatUS appears to make up rules as they go that negatively impact their membership and is especially concerning when their policy is not clearly spelled out within the Service Agreement provided to its members. I paid for a service and thought I was thankful that I had as it was one less thing to worry about with repairs to consider. In this instance, BoatUS only added to the aggravation and caused me to start looking for competitive service providers. Beware.......

Thanks Viper, My insurance company said they will reimburse me. However noted BoatUS should have covered it as their service has nothing to do with any repairs.

I's say kedge your boat out a bit away from your dock, early on the day you need it moved, and drop anchor. Then call Boat/US for a tow to the marina where you need the work done!

Just not right, they didn’t have a problem taking your money all those years.

I never could afford their insurance and when I told them there was no Boat US Tow service in my area, they said they would reimburse me if someone else did the towing. Needless to say the annual dues out weighted the benefits in my opinion and thus dropped them years ago. It's just amazing that many of these associations we may or may not join and pay dues to, turn out that the benefits they say you get turn out to be useless or can be obtained for less without joining an association. The damn fine print.

This sorry behaviour seems to be getting all too common nowadays....take your money and provide opinionated excuses when it is time to make good on the original promises.......thanks for posting...

I have the Boat US unlimited freshwater towing. In 2016 when my port side transmission locked up I called them to tow me back to my dock. They met me outside the harbor and towed me back in. Probably a mile at most for their trip out to meet me and put me back at my dock.

I showed them my Boat US card. He took down the information then towed me back. Didn't cost me a penny out of pocket so for me it worked as advertised.

The OP is in Charleston SC probably in salt water. Their saltwater program differs a bit from their freshwater one. Still, it should work as advertised.

I've had Boat/US for decades (probably as long as they had the program). I haven't used it yet, but it's good for anything you're on... the boat, the dingy, the PWCs, etc. For my PWC insurance, they (Progressive) made me sign up for their own towing program as a condition, even though I had Boat/US, so that wasted a bit of money, but their ins policy was still cheaper than alternatives even adding that towing on there. Had a friend who just used his tow benefit for the first time in ~10 years, and it was very similar to rgrew's case. He came back to the marina on one engine, then got the tow for the last little bit. He felt just that one tow was worth the cost of 10 years of payments, as it completely "destressed" him in having to get into a slip with just one engine on a very windy day.

In the OP's case though, it's a difference of an emergency tow vs a convenience tow. It also seems like his insurance who's taking care of the transmission should cover the relocation, just as your auto insurance would do for your car if it had to be towed to the repair facility. I can understand how this complicates the issue in this case.
