Cockpit Accent Lighting

Postby denpooch » February 20th, 2020, 6:06 pm

As I walk up and down transient docks on my cruises, I find many boats with some pretty nice 12 volt lighting. Many blues, a couple of reds, some with changing colors and an occasional standard incandescent light. Thats me.
I would be interested is seeing some evening pictures of your boat at the dock. I am not as interested in 'underwater' lighting at this point. Perhaps if I lived in Barbados.....
Anyway, has anyone modified the lighting on your vessel? If so, was it just a matter of changing a bulb? Share some pics. Might be fun to see your boat at night; changes or not.

I am not into colors so no mine will not be one of those. A huge pet peeve of mine is hitting the light switch and requiring sun glasses! That being said I did change either the fixture or bulb to led in a warm white as I do favour the incandescent look/color. Adding dimmers corrects the needing sunglasses thing.
Cheers, Hans

I replaced our factory aft deck and bridge lights with blue LED's also all cup holders with blue LED's and the subwoofer also has the blue LED's. Looks really cool, but seems to attract bugs from miles away! so I barely turn them on.
Our last boat was red, so I did the same with red LED's and had no bug problems even when others near me did. Consider red, for that reason.

Previous owner of ours did the blue light thing. I like the blue, sometimes. Nothing shows better, in my opinion, than the standard warm white. Seen some really decked out boats, but it all comes down to your own taste.

I changed the bulbs out for LEDs and replaced some with updated/newer versions. Be careful with colors - blue attracts bugs, and some folks just don't like red. I replaced a cockpit flood light with a multi-color LED and it works well, as you can go with white for lots of light, or red if you still want to see at night. It also has the "disco" option where it strobes through all the colors.

One other thing - PoPo has started getting on some folks for flashing blue lights on boat speakers at night. It seems only law enforcement is allowed to have flashing blue lights in this state... No sense of humor with some people.
