Transmission Question

Hi Group, I've got a transmission question. We fired the engines today on our Carver. The Starboard prop shaft did not spin when the engine was running while in neutral. The Port prop shaft does spin while the engine is running. It seems to be in neutral because the engine will start but the shaft spins fairly fast. Is this normal? I'm thinking that if the transmission is in neutral the shaft should not be turning. There is no load on the props as the boat is on a trailer. I had to remove the flybridge controls when I replaced some wood up there. I thought I had got everything back together in the proper adjustment. I marked everything before disassembly. I'm thinking that I need to tweak the Port transmission lever a little but I'm not sure. By the way these are Morse controls. Thanks, Jim

Heh there.....make sure the trans is in neutral without the cable connected and try it......some trans will get creep while in neutral....maybe clutch clearance is small/temp etc....generally there is no power to it when like that, you can stop the shaft quite easily with a strap wrench etc.

Did it do this before you made the mods ?

It might do that sitting out of the water with absolutely no drag on the system. Drop that prop into water and it will probably stop. Once the trans fluid gets warmed up also might have an impact, as the cold fluid will create a coupling between the engine and output. If you can turn the shaft by hand easily without the engine running, I would not be very concerned at all.
