Our new to us Carver 444 has an ice maker that gets cold but doesn't make ice. We are trying to decide if it's worth having someone come out to fix it. It would be at least $200 just get someone there. Curious if anyone has had this same issue? Also, do you use this ice just for coolers or do you put it in drinks too?

Its most likely easy enough to get working.. have you put a thermometer in it to see how cold? Is this a raritan., Uline or ? The ice mold (the mechanism that actually makes the ice)in the units are mostly generic, the same that will be the in a home ice maker in your fridge. If you will take the plastic cover off the front of the ice mold that's in the unit and post a pic or describe what you have then it will easier to know which version you have for troubleshooting. . One will have a large plastic gear the other a small gear you will see right on the front behind the cover.

Have you looked at the price of a replacement unit? Not cheap.
They’re easy to remove..just take it out and take it to a repair facility yourself and save a big travel fee.

As fas as what you use ice for…all depends on the quality of the water coming to your boat. Our marina, I wouldn’t hesitate to use ice in my drinks. I’ve been to places I absolutely would not drink the water or make drink ice with.

I have the same ice maker and the same boat. Not sure what your background is or knowledge with ice makers. There is a wire bar, while lifted up stops the ice maker from making ice. The bar has to be released and flipped down in order for the unit to work and make ice. We always keep the arm up while not at the boat and the ice maker on to keep the ice frozen. For when we arrive.

Buster53 is right, it totally depends on the quality of the water. If I am on shore/city water we will use the ice in drinks. If water from the tank, not so much for drinks, but great for the cooler.

There is also a chance that when the ice makers get older the white paint MAY have a chance to peel away in small frags and end up in your ice, Just keep an eye it that,

Greg

I had the same ice maker on my 355. I replaced the ice tray and timer assembly and it worked well. I replaced it the next year with a refrigerator.
The fridge holds about 40 12oz cans and keeps then very cold. It is much more useful than the ice maker.

Sorry for the delay with answers but been side tracked with other boating issues. So, the ice maker gets cold to 0 degrees, but still no ice. I’ve included a photo. Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions. Thank you!

Here's a troubleshooting guide for that. generic ice maker assemblies are easily replaced or it could be no water flowing through the water valve the tests here will help figure out the issue....http://www.the-appliance-clinic.com/modcres.html

Michclay, those are fairly easy to replace if it’s the mold. I replaced the one on my Uline and it cost less than $150. It’s either not getting water or the mold is not working properly. Turn it on and watch the gear shown in your picture to see if it is slowly turning. It turns very slowly. You may want to make note of it’s position and then check on it a few minutes later to see if it has moved. If it has then it’s most likely the water valve that’s the problem. If it hasn’t moved then it likely the mold tray itself.

g36, it was several years ago when I replaced mine and I did order OEM. Don’t remember the exact price, but I know is was Less than $150. I think it was right around $100. I always try to go with OEM whenever possible, as long as they aren’t outrageously over priced.
