600 HP merc

Sitting here watching a review of the new Mercury 600hp , V12......wow quite the engine....1200 + pounds, 2 speed gear case that is steerable, quiet. Man these should push anything. I don't want to do the fuel usage calculations for this level of HP though....it will be interesting to see the final numbers using the gear case.
Exciting for large boats........I wonder who will work on these technical marvels ????.........

But you do wonder with all the new technical stuff that comes with these new O/B's.

I looked at the mechanics a while ago when Merc had their unveiling, the components are beefy for sure, pretty impressive. We'll see how it holds up in the field, that's the true test.
Hopefully they won't do what they did with the defunct Vazer. Barely any training on it and no technical manuals but we were expected to repair them, and if you wanted to take your Master's Certification, you had to answer questions about them in the exam without having had any training at all, very frustrating.

They must have done their homework as to the saleability of such a product.....the development costs must have been quite expensive to say the least. I will follow along to see what style of boat gets this upgrade as they seem to have some partners that have designed transom areas to support the install of multiple engines........

Seeing as how many SEVEN MARINE engine there were out there in their short existence (they quit making them), I can see Merc selling a whole bunch of these if there are even remotely reliable.

That doesn't always ensure success. They sunk millions into the Vazer for R&D, market research, etc. and it went nowhere. The good thing about this release is that at least it's in line with the direction in which outboards are heading, they're getting more popular than ever. Its mechanics makes it more attractive too for a few reasons. It's definitely in a narrow financial niche though that's for sure but that seems to be the way the industry is heading anyway.

One thing is for sure....they have been around a very long time and have survived many market shifts. I wonder what part of the world this new engine is directed at, maybe nothing specific at all except for large boats.
Be interesting on the back of a bass boat....

.....sure get to the fish in a hurry....

If you think that's crazy, check out the ALFADAN engine. 654HP out of a 7.5L four cylinder....

I got news for buddy in the video, they're still going to stick 6 of those on the back of a boat! I think the most impressive thing about the new Verado is the automatic transmission and steerable gearcase, not the horse power. Keeping the powerhead stationary offers a solution to one of the main limitations for multiple outboard installations; space. Moving independently of one another, and joystick control will be appealing to a lot of people too.
