On my 405 been doing some spring maintenance including shaft alignment,oil and all the other checks etc.I've not had any issues with my shaft logs getting hot but this weekend I've found my stbd is getting up to 100f using my infared thermometer aimed at the top of the nut the hottest part i meaured. . I was on a real slow short cruise we, shut it down and came back on 1 engine. I've never had the traditional drip as my Trojan F32 had on its packing. so ive kept a pretty close eye on this. My Port is still nice and cool with really no drips (never had)when running. Again I've never had a problem so I have no clue what packing that they currently have. I have tried adjusting the nuts and did back it off but temp was still warm so I've decided it's time to repack it. I know the shaft size is 1.5 and the packing should be 1/4. What I am interested in is recommended packing material to install in it, I will remove all of what's in there . What are your guys thoughts about this? And the packing type to use?

I just repacked mine on the hard with GTU synthetic packing on Amazon along with a spray can of white grease added before each packing round. Mine have never leaked or dripped either and were the OEM packings from 1998 and were due as the had brown burn marks. Mine took three rounds of packing per shaft. also in the spring before launch, I spray silicon on the shafts at the strut cutlass bearings. One mechanic suggested cutting the new packings on a 45 degree angle instead of 90 for easier insertion and better sealing! Good luck!

Thank you mjk1040. I was looking at maybe using the gtu I just thought I could get some responses from others for good vs bad or other options/opinions. On packing materials. With over 60 views and only 1 response I guess not to many people have had experience repacking.

Updating my own thread. I ended up replacing my shaft packing in the water with the gtu material. The water coming was my big worry but really wasn't a big deal, but I still used some emergency (silicone) tape which adheres to itself wet or dry a couple rounds around and this almost completely stopped the inflow of water which gave me plenty of time to dig out the old packing and install my precut new gtu packing. It was definitely in need of replacement. I have ran it some and am allowing just a bit of drip while running which comes to a stop after being stopped for a couple hours. I also had read where mis alignment in the shaft can also cause this overheating. So with the old packing I had already backed off the nut and with water coming in still was hot. So I did recheck mine and readjusted, so I probably created some of this myself. Live and learn. So hopefully others can do this replacement after reading this and not be too nervous about sinking the boat..
