Vacation Time

Postby RGrew176 » July 31st, 2020, 10:17 pm

My vacation started when I got off Friday morning. Spending the next 9 days on the boat. Not sure if I will take the boat anywhere as the event I was scheduled to participate in was cancelled due to the Covid 19 situation. Was going to go to Middle Bass Island then South Bass Island for the regatta but thats not going to happen now.

Would still like to go to Put in Bay for a couple of days but they have recently become a bit of a Covid 19 hotspot with several people contracting it after spending time there. Not sure if I am going there or not. If I do it will be mid week and hopefully the crowds are a bit smaller.

Decisions, decisions. Of course I always have the jetski in my back pocket. It could get quite the workout over the next few days if I don't end up cruising somewhere.

Rick, come on up to Menominee. Gas is 2.20 a gal. More important, there are 0 cases of Covid in the 2 counties surrounding the area. As long as you can fit the jetski in your pocket, bring it with! :-D 8-) er

Couple from my marina just visited Put in Bay. The mini outbreak occurred in June. They said rigorous protocols are being followed now. Said they had a good time and it was not crowded.

That is why I am thinking of going on Wednesday mid-week. It shouldn't be that crowded. Planning to arrive Wednesday and depart Friday if I go.

Today I finally got the jetski out. I headed out about noon. According to the weather forecast there were supposed to be some thunderstorms possible after 2 PM. I went to the places I wanted to visit today. I did have my cell phone with me so about 2:30 ish I checked the radar. There was a solid line of thunderstorms moving in my direction.

I hightailed it back to the launch ramp and pulled the jetski out of the water. I decided to go and have lunch and head back out after the storms had passed. While I was eating lunch the thunderstorms just fizzled out and we did not get any rain.

I drove back to the launch ramp and launched again. Headed out on the Detroit River and spent a couple more hours having some fun. I headed back in about 7 PM so all in all it ended up being a nice day.

Going out again tomorrow.

Thought about it but it's the chance of thunderstorms that keeps me on the boat. The one thing that scares me about being out on the water is lightning. Been caught out twice in 50+ years of boating. It's not a pleasant experience.

The vacation continues. Headed across the lake to Put in Bay today (Wednesday). Lake Erie was nice waves less than a foot. Sunny but cool. Had to wear a light jacket on the lake. Knock on wood the crossing was uneventful. Saw 5 other boats and one freighter while crossing.

Because of the Canadian border being closed I could not take a direct route from Gibraltar to PIB. I had to skirt the US/Canada border. Now for a couple of days of island fun. Heading back home Friday.
