1997 405 soft spot in fiberglass floor left of helm

Postby markcleaton » June 26th, 2025, 5:34 pm

I have a 97 405 that was dry docked open to the elements for nearly 5 years. The caulking between the helm and the flybridge "floor" shrunk allowing water penetration, resulting in a notably "soft" 2t x 2ft area of the fiberglass floor left of the helm station.

My question is, what would be the best way to repair this? From the top side by cutting the 2x2 section out of the fiberglass, then repairing the area and replacing glass and gel coat, or should we plan to go in from the bottom by taking out the headliner section just above the sofa in the salon? There is no evidence of water penetration making it to the interior, and the headliner is in great shape. My goal is to be the least destructive as possible.

Welcome aboard. I would consider going in from the top. Do a careful cut so you can reuse the top glass layer without cutting through the bottom glass layer (ceiling). Remove all of the compromised core, replace it, then cover it off with the original top glass layer you removed. You could either resurface the area with non-skid and try to blend it in with the rest of the floor, redo all of the floor's non-skid, or you can cover the entire floor with a product such as Seadek flooring.

I agree with Viper's comments.

You can peruse threads on here too, to get some ideas. There've been a couple members who have documented their repairs (with pics too!) where they have had to do a "top-in" repair on a deck or swim platform.
