I am a new member having just purchased a '96 Aft Cabin. I am recently retired and new to cruising thus this will be my "starter boat". I am now trying to bring some if the interior refinements into the 21st century, and was wondering what people have done about mounting/placing a flat screen tv and or what you've done with the entertainment center containing the vintage cassette deck player on the starboard side of the saloon.

Welcome aboard William. I like the last name, reminds me of the better music era "Cat Scratch Fever"

I simply placed our TV on top of a counter in the salon. We don't gun it when underway so no worries there about it falling, and when we're out in bad seas, I simply place it on the floor between the cabinet and the chair so it won't fall over. I take it home every winter and don't want to put holes in the counter so this works for me. Also no space in that area to place a wall mount.

I still have the full component stereo units in the cupboard. Still haven't decided if I want to keep or replace with something new but I use it all the time at the dock, and can choose which cabin the music plays in or out in the cockpit/bridge. Not really on my priority list of things to replace. Besides, I'm old school when it comes to audio equipment, I just think it's a better quality sound, and I like all the lights on the equalizer. 8-) A lot of options out there though from iPod plug-ins to satellite Sirius to smart phone controlled/synced ways of playing music. Still deciding but I have music right now so I'm good for a while.

Thanks Viper...
Regarding the TV, your idea was exactly what I had planned on, counter to floor as needed. Regarding the entertainment center, I really haven't figured out what's there except that I don't even own a cassette tape anymore. I have a Sonos system that provides all the music I'll ever need. Seems like valuable real estate not to use more productively.

I did a upgrade to our entertainment centre this season. Picture below. There was already a flat screen installed on one of the swing mounts where the old tube TV wold have been. I replaced the flat screen with a lighter LED unit that draws way less power (28W) Below the TV there was a DVD player, the Radio, and 6 disc. CD changer. I took all that apart and built an new mount for the stereo and created a shelf. I used 3/4" baltic birch plywood and stained it with a black stain. I also made a filler piece to hide the gap (and wires) below the TV.

Cheers
Fraser

They make and have used industrial strength Velcro, no holes required.
