444 bait well pump?

Postby Pete » January 10th, 2020, 12:47 pm

Looking for clarification:
Originally the surveyor said it was my waste discharge pump fitting that was corroded and now on the written survey they are calling it a bait well pump inlet.

I did not know there was a bait well. Here is what was written:

The bait well pump inlet port is significantly corroded; the pump is not operational – suggest renewing pump (Note: if there is no need for a bait well pump, suggest fitting a wash-down pump instead)

Any insight would be appreciated, I sent an email asking for clarification but wanted a second opinion. Thanks!

The hose looks too small to be a sewage discharge pump. If you don't have a live bait well, then use the through hull and hose for some else. If your boat is like mine, I have two fresh water wash downs, but a sea water wash down may come in handy. Just a thought.

Here is the surveyor's explanation, I wish I got my eyes on what they are talking about.

Sorry for the confusion. The existing pump is a low-pressure pump, with outlet on the outboard side of the transom and a push-pull type switch inside the transom locker. The live bait tank is no longer there. The aft holding tank pump is still there and operational, switch is in the lazarette.

I believe I would have to investigate. Follow the hoses. If it was indeed at one time a baitwell pump and there is no longer a baitwell, why would you replace it? If this is the case one end will go to a through hull below the water line and the other should be going to nowhere.
If it is a holding tank discharge pump, One end will go to the holding tank and the other to a though hull most likely above the water line.
It could also be a wash down pump.

Either way, I would chase it down, as it looks like it may be ready to cut loose.

I believe the surveyor mentioned that the valve was closed off mitigating that fitting from leaking, but that was not clear as I was envisioning a waste discharge, not a bait well setup. I'm going to try and get back on the boat this week and dig deeper, I need to know.
