Location of hydraulic steering pump on 1986 Carver 42 Aft Cabin

Hi everyone,
I'm slowly learning where everything is located on my Carver. My steering is operational in the lower helm, but not working in the upper helm. It was suggested that the system may not need fluid, but may need to be pressurized to 15-20 PSI. Does anyone know where the hydraulic steering pump is located?

Much appreciated,

John

The pump or helm is what the steering wheel is fastened to. I assume you are asking for the location of the oil reservoir/pressure tank. It can anywhere along the hydraulic line routing but it should be in an accessible spot. If you don't see it under the helm or in the engine compartment, check in the aft cabin at the transom, there should be access to the steering cylinder, rudders, trim tab pump, etc. You're looking for something like this, check the fluid level and pressure as indicated on the label....

On our 85 3607 the reservoir is under the bed in the aft cabin on the starboard side. We keep a bicycle pump on board just in case it needs to be pressurized.

Here is another example of what you would be looking for. Not sure when they stopped using this one, but it's an older one.

In had a 4207, but no exactly sure of the location anymore. It may be at the transom.
You may have access through the port side "night table" next to the bed. There is a removable panel in the lower section.
If not, you may have to remove the mattress, then the cover, then another cover under that storage compartment.
If that's where it is, I suggest you climb into the storage space under the bed before heading to the bilge with your arms. I did- not do this and went in from the bed platform. I got in alright, and then slipped in a bit farther, and could not get out. My wife was visiting a neighbor's boat. And there I am beating in the hull and screaming "Help!" Finally she hears it, comes down to the aft room, sees my legs sticking out of the hole in the bed platform, and of course, begins to laugh. Avoid that! But have somebody nearby in case you can't get out.

Too bad she didn't. It would be framed and displayed prominently.
