Hello all, New kid on the block. After extensive research we settled on a Carver for our next boat and ultimately settled on a 405 as our preferred model choice. Took two years to find the perfect one and we are now proud owners of a very nice 1998 or 1999? Model 405.

A couple of quick questions for you other 405 owners or anyone for that matter.

Firstly, In the power cord locker on the transom port side there are two hose connections on the bottom under the power/cable/ phone connectors. One is labeled "Pressure Water" the other is labeled "starboard something" the rest of the decal is missing. Does anyone know what these are for? Note that there already is a shore fresh water connector on the starboard side so the one labeled "Pressure Water" cant be that. Any ideas?

Also, just before every raw water strainer for the engines, genny, and air cond pump, there is what appears to be bypasses of some sort which are all closed, anyone know what these are for? The plumbing is the same on all of them: from the raw water intake thru-hull it goes to a ball valve as normal then goes to a tee, the opposite side of the tee goes to a sea strainer then on to the respective engine or the air con pump. All completely as normal. However the other side of each of these tee's which are upstream ie "before" the strainers goes to closed ball valves. The outlets of these ball valves then go on to a sort of manifold affair which has a line that disappears toward the back of the boat. ......clear as mud eh?

Any suggestions or thoughts greatly appreciated!

Just out of creative thinking, without any hindrance of knowledge about your particular boat - owners here will certainly give the correct answers - my thoughts;

the plumbing: close the thru hull, open the other one and perhaps in the back there is a location where you can let it suck out of a container or tank full of anti-freeze for winterizing? Apparently it is possible to choose where to take the cooling water from instead of from the outside. So there is likely something special on the other side of that manifold thingy. perhaps even that additional hose connection...

The "Pressure Water" hose connection is likely plumbed into your on-board freshwater system. You can you that to wash down anything with your potable/fresh water. I'm drawing a blank on what "starboard something" would be for.

The setup on your raw water intakes sound like a way to introduce antifreeze to the raw water systems for the purposes of winterizing, or she spent some time in salt water and a previous owner installed a freshwater rinse system. If the hoses are heading aft, follow them, maybe they go to the "starboard something" connection.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I wondered if this bypass looking piping arrangemet may have something to do with winterizing but I haven't quite got my head around how exactly it might work. At least now I know it is not a standard arrangement on the 405's. The hose that leads away aft from the manifold where the three raw water lines connect is impossible to follow.

I noted the "Pressure water" hose connector does indeed tie into the potable fresh water piping via a closed ball valve slightly downstream (outlet side) of the freshwater pump. It could be used for fresh water wash down if the ball valve was opened or it could be used to pump antifreeze into the fresh water system. Using for antifreeze doesn't seem to make sense though as why not just pump the antifreeze directly into the shore water inlet hose connector.

The "starboard something" hose connector heads toward the front of the boat and I'm wondering if it might be hot water. The manual says that Carver uses the Starboard engine on the 405 for hot water heating.

The boat is put away for the winter so I guess I'll have to wait for spring to see if I can't trace things further.

Welcome to the forum.....that part sure does sound like a flush set up......curious, does your registration number start with ON ?

The final 2 digits in your hull ID number is the year of your vessel. Depending on when the boat was manufactured, your engines may be a different year, so when shopping engine parts, always use the serial number disclosed on the engine blocks. Your owners manual will define how to interpret the hull ID number. Sounds like someone made your winterization process easier with those valves. Great boat! Good luck. er
