Exhaust muffler replacement starboard Carver 326

Postby Kootenaykruzer » September 13th, 2016, 9:30 pm

Can anyone offer some insight as to what would cause a leak in the bottom of water uplift muffler? Also, tips on getting access to re and re would be appreciated. Starboard muffler leaking water from the bottom into the bilge.
Will not fit between floor frame, but looks to me like it should come out just front of helm seat pedestal. Will require removing starter batteries and generator muffler to move it out. Any experience or suggestions would really be appreciated.

Some mufflers have a single mounting stud in the bottom center of the canister. Not sure about your model, but if so someone at one time most likely pushed, pulled or fell on it and cracked the glass.
Sorry, can't help with access.

Don't know about your location in BC but out here we have to winterize. I've seen the bottom of these crack if not drained properly before winter.

Thanks for insight. Yes the previous owner used her all winter (engine compartment heater) but I wonder if at some point things got a little chilly. By the sounds of things you guys are suggesting I will need a replacement. Now if I can figure out access, I can get underway! Thanks again.
We live in southern BC, but keep her in the water year round on Lake Pend Oreille Idaho.

I'm assuming you have Vernalift mufflers from Centek. They are fiberglass and can be repaired. Take them to a fiberglass guy.

Hey guys thanks again for the insight. Just wanted to post a bit of an update. Managed to get the muffler disconnected and out. Not without a fair bit of work involved, however, did not have to cut the salon floor frame as marina suggested. Took out stater batteries, generator battery, generator muffler and numerous hoses and managed to work it out in front of the generator just in front of lower helm step. Crack in muffler right where the round bottom and flange connect. Looks like a bit of delamination between the base flange and barrel. Also noticed that three holes were drilled in each corner of the muffler base to anchor to the boat. These mounting holes with screws were done after install, as it doesn't look to me like there should be holes drilled in the base. Can anyone comment on whether or not they anchor there mufflers?

Anyway, hopefully the glass guy can get her reapaired next week. Will keep you posted.

If they are the lift type muffler with a cylindrical body and a square base, they usually have a hole on each corner to fasten the muffler to a platform.

Thought I would post an update on the muffler repair. Had the muffler re-glassed however they removed the base flange in order to repair and re-enforce, looks great and strong. The install went much smoother than taking it out. Once in place and reconnected I used three "L" brackets and a band around the base of the muffler to anchor it back to the hull. Pretty loud when she first fired up but once the muffler was recharged it purred like a kitten. Pretty pleased I was able to tackle it on my own, likely saved a few $. Appreciate the advice and support found in this forum. Wishing all Carver Owners a Happy Holiday and trouble free boating in 2017!!
