Proper batteries for Diesel volvos 44MY

Postby extraextra » March 1st, 2019, 11:24 am

I have a bank of 5 batteries, plus a separate one for the generator. Want to replace all of them except the generator battery. Should they all (in the bank) be deep cycles? Boat is a '05 44 MY.

If standard configuration from factory, your batteries are separated into a house bank, and an engine bank ( one batt for each engine ), and a third bank for the generator. Engine (starting or cranking batteries) will give you more initial burst to your engines for starting. Deep cycle will provide longer reserve time to run house systems if you are running without battery charger support. Personal choice for how you set up, but I would do cranking batt for the engines, and deep cycle for the house. Just make sure you have good quality marine batteries. You should have separate chargers for each house & engine banks. Good luck. 8-) er

Thanks! The Gen battery is separate and is a start type. Going down next week and will check on what the others are.
Stay tuned!

We purchased a '94 440 MY last year. Boat has two 8D batteries plus a genset battery. I was surprised it didn't have a house and engine bank.

Really, Imo you should have dedicated start batteries for your diesels......It will be interesting to see what you have there to see if all those batteries you are talking about are on one bank ( switch ) or two banks.... :beergood:
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.....

Hmmm, 5 batteries sounds pretty much like my stock setup. 2 for the the port engine and bow thruster, 2 for the starboard engine and strern thruster, one for house and the generator has it's own making for 6 batteries total. I did change the house bank to consist of dual L16 6 volts giving me a 435 AH capacity which MAY change to quad L16's for a total of 870AH. :-O

That being said all the batteries are starting series 31 with the exception of the house which is deep cycle.
Cheers, Hans

You may want to really look around the ER for Batteries.
I have a total of 11 Batteries all over the ER
4 group 31's for my bow thruster -between engines near ft bulkhead
4 8D's for Mains, 2 per engine behind each
2 8D's mounted at the stern fr the house
and 1 31 for the Gen
