86 Mariner 3697 steering issue

I'd try and fix what I have. When the piston is fully retracted. Is the broken part still external? I'm guessing it is. Get a ship to fabricate a stub and weld it on with the piston fully extended. Someone that had welding certs, not just anybody with a welder

Yeah I thought about that but I think the shaft might be bent as well. I think it’s hard to see in the photo, but it looks like that internal shaft has a pretty significant bend and I’m not sure if that can be straightened. I’ll get it out this weekend and take a closer look.

Does anyone know if this is a K-19 or a k-18? I've just learned there two similar units with the only difference being the stroke length. k-19 is 9", while the k-18 is 7". I didn't think to measure it when i was there this past weekend, and never thought to get a picture of the label itself. Just thought if someone knew i could get the ball rolling.
