Engine Water Pump - Impeller Replacement

Took my 1987 Carver Aft Cabin out this weekend and noticed that the Starboard Engine Temp gets real warmer (i.e. about 200F) when I run it in idle in and out of my Marina. When I get the engine up to over 1000 RPM, the temp comes back down to 150-160, normal. I have looked at the exhaust and water is being flushed out at both Idle and Higher RPM, little less water than at idle. I believe it is time to change the impeller as I haven't noticed any blockage in the strainer.

Are there any good tips/videos out there regarding changing an impeller on a Crusader Engine? I looked on You Tube, didn't find anything specific to my type of engine. Access to the pump looks kind of tough, cover has a belt on it.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.
Scott

Impeller goes in from the opposite end of the pulley. The bracket is in the way. So I removed the hoses and the pump, and rebuilt the pump on the bench.

If you find pieces missing from the original impeller, you'll probably have to pull the hose going to the oil cooler and retrieve those pieces.

Thanks Fred! Doing some research I also found a good website with pictures to help out. Here is the link for other Carver owner out there!

Yep, much easier to do on the bench. As mentioned, if there are pieces of the impeller missing, you must find them. I try to put the pieces together like a puzzle as a check that I got them all. I like back-flushing with a garden hose from the opposite end of the oil cooler. This also washes out most other debris that might be in there. Speaking of debris in the oil cooler (U cooler), those are notorious for clogging up with pieces of the anode that is supposed to be in there via the plug. This is usually overlooked and in time breaks apart, often clogging the unit.

I watch "Crusader" and "Carver" on ebay.
This spare pump popped up today. I am in no way associated with or know the seller.

Fred,

Thanks for the great info on the e-bay info! So, I had a buddy come and help me trouble shoot.....to find out it was just an anti-freeze problem and not the pump! When I told him that the engine temp would climb to over 200 in idle but when I set around 1000 RPM it would cool back down to 160 he thought I may have a thermostat problem. He walked me through the cooling system for my familiarity and when we open the heat exchanger noticed there was no anti-freeze in the starboard one. PORT heat exchanger was full. How it go through the survey I will never know. We filled it up, ran for 15 minutes, starboard engine stayed cool at 155 and we didn't notice any leaking from that area. So, some $$ saved at this point. However, since it has been almost 2 years since the original impellers have been changed I think this winter while it is sitting (use a bilge heater during the winter months) I will send to this person listed on this site to "rebuild" both pumps for "preventive maintenance" for next spring.

Again, I really appreciate you help, but wanted to provide feedback. High learning curve as a new boat owner, kind of fun!!

Now you have to figure out where the coolant went. There's a leak somewhere.

Fred,

Concur. Having a mechanic come out next week.

Question for you. Ran the engines the other day at idle for 30 min, temp never exceeded 160 on both. Took it out for about an hour, RPM up to around 1500, temp stayed steady between 160-170.

2 days later I took the boat out (ie. today), and before I started things up, checked heat exchangers, fluid levels all the same as they were 2 days ago. Oil sitting good too. Felt all hoses, no noticeable leaks/moisture (to indicate leaks). Range engines today....good at idle then went out for about an hour, running at 1800 RPM. Port engine maintained 160, Starboard engine (one with problem stated above) got up to 180-190. Never exceeded 200. Had some friends onboard who are boat saavy, and they said that spread is ok, and the higher temp should be fine. Checked fluids again after it cooled down, normal, no indication of leaking. Trying not to be paranoid, but trying to learn at the same time. Will continue to watch, just wanted to get your opinion with what is going on.

Thanks in advance.

Scott

Anytime there is low coolant, the indication is a leak. The mechanic should have a pressure checker to check for leaks. I'd be paranoid as well.
I like 160. 180 not so much. Could simply be gauge error as well, but the low coolant would have me worried.
