Found A Mechanic Who Will fix My Transmission

Last week I got a tip from a fellow Boat Club member on who to get to fix my transmission. Yesterday on my way down to my boat I stopped at Humbug Marina in Gibraltar Michigan to talk to the transmission guy. I explained my issues and he gave me a probable synopsis. I most likely, because it is stuck in forward, have fused clutch plates.

He gave me a rough estimate based on what I told him. He estimates around 2K should fix the problem. I hope his estimate is in the ballpark. I was planning on up to 4K.

So, this upcoming winter season I will store my boat there at Humbug. He said that after they get all the boats winterized, including mine he will then work on the transmission. I am lucky I caught him as he is retiring next February and he comes highly recommended by a couple of my fellow club members.

Of course I won't know how well its done until I launch next spring. Finally moving in the right direction getting this issue fixed.

Good luck Rick. that sounds like a very fair price for a rebuild.

I trust $2k is for the rebuild only and doesn't included re & re, alignment, sea trial, etc.?

I believe if he is only planning to replace the clutch kit, its only about $150 in parts. About $450 for a complete rebuild kit. least that's what I found when I though I may have needed to rebuild one. So if he is just replacing the clutches, it should be in line. The marina charged the previous owner of my boat about 1k to remove the tranny replace the flex plate (about $200 part), reinstall, realign and sea trial.
Oh, for a BW velvet drive.

With winter just around the corner there most likely will not be a seatrial since the boat will be on the hard and winterized.

A sea trial should be part of the job even if it can't get done until after launch in the Spring. That's also when your job warranty should start. In such cases, I don't expect to be fully compensated for a job until a sea trial is done whether it's the next day or next Spring. You should discuss that with them.
