Hey all...

New guy here, so forgive me if I'm missing where this has already been covered. I did multiple searches and couldn't find any information.

I have a 98 405 Aft. Last night after our firework show, I pulled anchor and headed for home. Upon arrival at the marina, I tried shifting starboard engine to reverse to begin maneuvering for the slip and was quite shocked when I added a little power and we shot forward instead of reverse. In near panic I shifted to neutral and forward and back to reverse and could l feel the lack of tension in the shifter handle. I quickly shut down the engine so we could get into the slip (and to avoid being rebranded "Dock Crusher") after parking did some checking and see I have a broken shift cable.

Has anyone replaced one that can give me some pointers? I've called my local marina parts department and they aren't even sure which replacement cable to use. I have the numbers off the current cable (C8 FL 360 172). I'm certain they have the same type cable but how do you know the length you need?

Any information is appreciated!! :usa:

Welcome aboard. Pretty sure that's a Uflex C8 series cable. Can't remember which number represents the length. If it's the last and it's inches, that would make it a 14ft cable. The 360 would be a 30ft cable. See which one makes sense for your application.

I have 405 never had to replace a cable yet. You can run it yourself if you haven't explored your boat I can help answer the routing if you need. There is good access on these boats for most everything.

The marina should be able to match up the cable. It's a common universal 33C 3300 type cable. If they're not sure about the length, pull it out and measure it.

Thanks for the information! I too figured the numbers somehow indicated the length but wasn't sure which.

I guess I'll have to remove the old cable and measure to be safe. I was just worried about being able to get the new one routed correctly.

Off to attack it...hopefully it won't be like most projects and you find 5 other things that need addressed. ha.

Maybe too late but, maybe pull a rope thru when you remove the old one, could help stringing new one back in depending ...... :beergood:

Amazing news...

I started tracing the line to get my mind right before I unhooked and removed the old cable and low and behold it had simply come unattached at the lower helm control column! :captain2:

It's been a good day. haha Thanks for info and help. I'm sure I'll be back again.

Oh that's great. Why did it come off? That's a safety thing and shouldn't happen. Was there a cotter pin that broke off or something?
