Fwd Closet.jpg
Hello All,
I am wanting to convert the hanging closet in the fwd berth into a storage pantry for the galley. I am interested in how others may have done this. I have changed my mind dozens of times and just not sure of a good way to do this. I've started with making cardboard templates where I would want the shelves. My thought (today anyway) is to make the shelving from melamine. I'm just not sure on a good way to install them that would allow some flexibility in location, and strength to support the myriad of cans and containers the shelves will hold.
I'd appreciate all thoughts, comments, and suggestions.
Jim

This has nothing to do with a 405 but I did convert one hanging locker to shelving as can be seen here. Also used some cardboard for templates. Maybe it will give you some ideas.

Heh Jim ...have you tried a big box store...they seem to have lots of innovative solutions for adjustable shelving...tracks, pins etc......

Hans someone will get one nice boat someday if you sell...

Aint done yet but getting close.

My wife decided she wants 4" stainless cleats for many of the cupboard and drawer pulls. Ordered 14 of them from Bangood.

Sorry about the hijack.

In our 405 we actually used the hanging locker by the entrance to the aft cabin for our pantry. My wife still uses the storage under the fwd bed and to the port by the floor up there in fwd cabin too. she didn't want to convert that fwd locker for pantry. I gotta go with what the admiral wanted. I don't know why.

In my experience, I find that plywood keeps it's shape longer. I find melamine sags too easily after a while.

Agreed, melamine will deform in short order not to mention it is not meant to be used on a boat. I prefer to use marine grade plywood with a sanding and a couple of coats a quick dry varnish it actually looks really nice. Some of the cabinetry modifications in the galley were done this way except I also stained them black prior to varnish. Wood grain stands out nicely and looks killer.
In the picture below I opened up the old microwave hole and increased the storage area 2 fold in this location. The internal Box so to say is made of marine grade plywood, Russian Birch to be exact. The black stained wood grain looks great IMHO. for the Canadians, this plywood is available in 5' x 5' sheets at Reno Depot/Rona for 39$.

I added some shelves to the forward hanging locker a few years ago. I kept the rod so guests could hang clothes if needed.
