What the ......?

Main hatch over entry doors does not go even with the doors when closed. There is an opening ranging from 1" to 1 7/16". Although I'm in a covered slip and no rain can get in, the heat from the cabin can easily escape. Also, I cannot secure the interior with any lock. All of the edges of the non-mating surfaces appear to be 'factory'. Am I missing something? Right now I'm stuffing the opening with rags to keep the fall temperatures at bay. Trying to find a pool noodle to cut down. Any wisdom out there? Oh, by the way, it's on an '83 3607Aft Cabin.
Thanks for the education.

OK, how do I post pick of this?

You should post some pics. I had an 83 3607 and the hatch should slide fore and aft easily. If not, something might be jamming up the tracks. You should be able to take the whole hatch off to see if there are any issues. IIRC (it's been decades since I've done this) you have to take the caps off the end of the tracks (1 screw each) then take the lower piece of wood off... it's screwed in from the top, then the whole panel should slide aft and off.
My biggest issue was not water... it was trying to seal that junction against spiders crawling through there and making home somewhere.

Might need another angle on that pic to see what's there.
That does not look like the stock hatch. Is it made of wood? The original was a plywood top, trimmed out on all four sides with teak. The front edge (actually the aft-most edge) was angled away from the doors and would stick out past the doors by a good 3 or 4 inches, so there was no way of rain getting anywhere near the top of the door even in the heaviest downpour. What are those four square things? Velco pads?
Apologize for the crudeness of the drawing, but here's a quick "side view" of how the hatch matched up to the doors:

You are absolutely correct in your remarks and sketch. The hatch will slide a further three inches aft, but there is nothing to fill the void between the bottom of the hatch and the tops of the doors. This leaves a good three inch (or more) space for heat to egress. Is there supposed to be a 'filler barrier' attached to the hatch where you have shown the veertical touching both the hatch and the doors?
Also, there is a sliding bolt latch that works if the aft part of the hatch is lined up with the tops of the doors.
Yes, those are velcro pads someone installed for reasons unknown. They no longer exist.
Thanks for your help.

The latch would have been right behind that vertical board behind the doors. You'd slide the hatch aft, reach under and slide the latch over, then shut the two doors. The doors would close up against that vertical board pretty close. The sides f the vertical board are where I had issues with spider getting through, because there is about 1/4" or so clearance on both sides of that vertical board. I had put some sticky-backed foam on the ends of that vertical board to close that gap and that lasted for a couple years. I always thought I'd come up with a better solution for that.

NOt the best picture but you can see the wood portion that extends over the doors.

My guess, there was some removable canvas attached to the pads to prevent rain/spray from getting thru the large gap.

Are there any 83-ish 3607s in the Pickwick/Iuka area where the owner would be kind enough to allow me to look at their boat? I have iseas regarding my hatch, but time has proven too often that my ideas suck.
