I was finally able to work on the boat this weekend. She needed the bottom redone and really needs a full compound and wax, as it was neglected last year due to covid access restrictions.
while painting the bottom, I had my shiny new aluminum anodes on the truck tailgate. A curious boater stopped to talk. He looked at my old anodes, that where due to be replaced. He told me that if I paint the new ones with the bottom paint, they will last a lot longer! He says he gets 6 or more years out of his.
I just smiled, and said, great idea!

Nice! No sense arguing. Had that conversation with a guy up here for several years about his zinc anodes (fresh water). He prided himself on how long they've lasted. No matter what I said, he stood fast on his opinion. His aluminum platform brackets are toast now but hey, his anodes are still intact

When I told someone that they should be blank metal he answered that he did not paint them with antifouling.


but with clear coat....

If you really want anodes to last and last, leave the boat in the parking lot on stands......

Seriously though, there has been many misconceptions that refuse to go away over the years....

I wonder how quickly they'd degrade if you painted them with the old copper-based bottom paint?

You guys got it all wrong, listen to me I have been boating longer than some of you have been on this earth. Remove the anodes and put them in your tool box for the summer. No way will they wear. I can tell you from experience when put back on at haul out and left on until spring launch there is no perceptible wear during the entire period they are bolted to your boat. You will never change an anode again, never!
