Hi,
I have 1989 Carver 3897 aft needing to replace fireboy halon suppression system. Could not find any instructions how to remove safely.

Please advise. Thanks

Mitch, I believe Fireboys self contained units all have a fusible link or glass bulb that will melt/ break at 175 F. Steel wire shroud prevents accidental release Some units have a cable that can break the glass bulb to manually release the agent. If you have the cable, or hitch pin assembly, carefully remove it, then you should be able to unbolt the tank clamps and carefully remove it. I would bring it to a certified fire extinguisher company and have them certify the tank, the gauge and recharge it.

CAUTION!!! Halon is DEADLY! Be extremely careful.

^^THIS. I wouldn't just replace it 'just because it's old'. Many can still be serviced and Halon was a great extinguishing agent.

Check, but I thought Halon wasn't an option anymore.

I think you can still get reclaimed Halon to recharge your extinguisher. But if it has failed, its most likely cheaper to get a new FM bottle.
If its not failed, you can have it checked, weighed and retagged for most likely less than $50.
