Elbows / Risers

Postby Capt Happy » March 22nd, 2022, 6:40 am

Good Day All,

Time for some preventive maintenance. Welcome any input on the best price/quality risers and elbows for the CM 350HT, V-8.
We are located in Canada, but open to US suppliers as well. Had a quote the other day, that just seemed high. Looking for some comparisons, but as with everything else this might be the normal increase in prices.

Thanks in advance for all replies. cheers

I've had good luck with Nuwave Marine for risers and manifolds.

I replaced mine from https://marineengineparts.com/ and decided on Sierra Brand. Very pleased with them.

I purchased crusader/pleasure craft risers and barr elbows.

I'm having a hell of a time removing the riser from the manifold. Any advice? Much appreciated.

Persistence, pry, leverage and hammer!!! That's the best I can remember because it's been a LONG time since I did that project! I do remember being very surprised how hard it was to get them apart and kept thinking I was missing some bolts somewhere that were still holding it together!

Thanks KM. I was working on it late last night and couldnt believe how difficult it was but others told me the same thing.
Gonna get out there and wail on it tonight again i guess, haha.
Thank you. My other thought is that i just replace the manifolds as well. Someone told me they looked ok but i might not take my chances.
Thanks again.

The manifolds have some rust inside of them. I am having the engine rebuilt and am definitely replacing the risers and elbows. With it being a fresh water cooled engine im wondering if i should replace the manifolds since they are somewhat worn, or if im ok since the raw water should not get into them due to the new risers and elbows.
Little bit of a dilemma i guess.

Mine were all raw water cooled, so I ended up replacing the manifolds when I did my risers and elbows. This was also in fresh water though. I was surprised how good condition they were as they were about 12 years old and I had read all kinds of horror stories about failed parts.

Not sure which engines you have or how the exhaust is configured, but mine were 83 454's. There was a big enough gap between the riser and the elbow that I could put the end of a long 2x4 in there and use that as leverage. I do at one point remember taking a cold chisel and some screwdrivers and trying to hammer them in where the gaskets were. Don't recall how successful (or not) that was, but I do remember making sure I didn't screw up the mating surface too much.

Pete, if you're pulling the engine for a rebuild, replace the manifolds and riser. A no brainer. :approve:
