Anchor chain buckling in hold

Hello, I have a Carver 356 aft cabin with 100 ft of anchor chain. occasionally the chain piles incorrectly in the hold, (buckling) and I'm unable to bring the anchor fully up until someone goes to the hold and spreads out chain. This is a concern because I often boat on my own. Has anyone encountered this issue? Perhaps you have a solution? I've tried placing a large funnel upside down in the hold to promote proper coiling but it's not working.

thanks for reading. Happy boating. Barb

You may be encountering something like chain twist........I used to lay out all the chain once a year on the dock remark the painted depth markers and reload the chain slowly trying to make sure it went in thru the gypsy straight.

If you watch your chain come in over the roller you can see the twist.....google it , there are some other methods as well.......good luck.

A straight chain is a relaxed chain in the locker....

I agree, chain twist. Once straightened out, a good quality swivel will take care of twist.
