I found water leaking from the starboard shaft seal on my 2000 396 aft cabin. Can anyone give me an idea for the cost of replacing the shaft seal? Of course, we have to pull the boat but I want to know the fair price for the replacement. Thanks.
By the way, we temporarily stopped the leak.

It cost us around 4K to replace ours on our 360 Mariner in SoCal. How old are they? They should last 10 years.

That looks like a SureSeal. Check out Tides Marine. The parts are not expensive, the $$$ is for paying someone else to do it. FYI I did mine while in the water, just have to be quick and you will need some really big wrenches.

That really looks like a Sure Seal as mentioned. When you have it replaced, make sure to install a spare on the shaft just ahead of it for future repairs. With a spare it can be done in the water in no time. Here is a pic of mine and the spare in place on the shaft.

Don't you have to remove the coupling on the shaft to do it? Seems like that would be the hardest part.

Thanks for the quick responses. The boat is a 2000 but I have owned for last 4 1/2 years. I guess it is possible they are original.

Where exactly is it leaking from? From what I can see in the pic, it doesn't look like the leak is at the shaft seal but from the cooling line/fitting instead. Or is it indeed leaking between the shaft and shaft seal and just running back? Is the housing cracked?

km1125, yes you have to remove the coupling. Removing the coupling nut was the hardest part. To do it I first had to grind down the outer wall of a socket wrench to fit into the recess in the coupling.
