Hello friends,

Happy Holidays. Ok, so I’m wanting to clean the engines off…is there an engine degreaser you recommend?

Once applied, should I put a plastic bag around the carburetors and lightly spray off the engines?

Kindly,
v/r,
Stephen

Here is a different view I have learnt the hard way over the years. Some food for thought perhaps.

I would clean the engines by hand with cloths you can dispose of properly, also that way you will avoid getting liquids in electrical parts, connections etc, and it gives you an eye on all the things around your engines as you do it. Consider, some of the cleaners may be flammable, something to avoid in a boat bilge.

To add, if your boat is in the water all the grease and oily bits will be washed into the bilge maybe setting off the bilge pump and pumping that into the surrounding water. So now you have a sheen and pollution incident, possibly finable in your area if picked up.

Even if you vac all the stuff out of the bilge you will be left with cleaning the residue left all over in the bilge area and your vac nevertheless. Well good luck with it, It is commendable that you want nice clean engines. I am sure there will be many differing views on this.

Very good points, sir. My cars are meticulous…and because I’m not at my slip everyday, keeping the boat clean of spider webs and spiders and other creatures…it’s driving me nuts.

I think it was on West Marines site, they had something called Spider off, just for spiders. I don't know how good it works, but there is also Tempo that you mix with water and can apply with a spray bottle. the residual lasts a week or better, plus resturants, hospitals etc use it so it is not highly toxic. While my Mariner was hauled out I hot water pressure washed it then applied Tempo. It did the trick. I will now spray some in the nooks and crannies where they seem to reproduce from to stay ahead of them.
