Carver 400 MY engine RPM issue

Engines: Cursader 454 XLi

This past weekend I took the family out into the bay and the stbd engine wouldnt go over 2500 RPM when I had the port at 3000. I backed the port down to 2500 and the stbd would follow it down regardless of throttle. When I throttle up the stbd it would drop 200 rpm.

No smoke or strange noises. Temps and oil pressure were normal.

I have a set of fuel filters I need to put on. And im planning on sending off the injectors for cleaning.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Steven

I have 454 xlis on my carver 405. You have 3 fuel filters per each engine. The first is the oberg (ufo) which is a screen and can be opened and cleaned. When i notice any rpm issues I look here first I do have some junk in my tank and have to clean this a couple or so times a year. I would check it and clean it. Next is the water seperator and then the inline filter by the tbi it may be a good idea to change them I f you don't know the last time they were done but hold off on sending out the injectors. The oberg could easily be the culprit and once cleaned I would test drive it before doing any other filter.

In case you didn't already know the oberg is black and a pancake or ufo shape with a bolt running through it. Put a basin under it to catch the gas and open it by loosing the bolt. It seperates in 2 pieces Remove the mesh screen and clean the screen then reinstall it

Make sure gas valves are in the off position. I know from experience.

So Viper, you think Crusader or Carver anticipated crap from the fuel tanks in these models? And what filter is at the throttle body? Mike

Thanks for the info guys.

Ill pull that filter apart this evening. I have a set of those pricy TB filters. They just need to be installed.

One thing worth mentioning is that engine RPM seems to get lower and lower every time I take it out. Junk in the filter would make sense.

Thanks,

Steven

This was a Crusader thing. Can't remember the recommended service interval off hand but I check them whenever I preform fuel service on a Crusader that has them. I find if they have never been serviced, they can get so bad that I don't even bother cleaning them and replace instead. After that, if serviced regularly, a cleaning is all they need. Crusader recommends they be checked within several hours run time when the vessel is new as it's likely to trap debris from a new tank/vessel build. But I suspect that's rarely done from what I've seen, which is unfortunate as it's the first line of defense in the system if memory serves me correctly.
