5.7 MPI Crusader Cruise and WOT Expected RPM?

I recently looked at a 1999 326 Aft Cabin and got a piece of info from the broker that I'm curious about. The seller told the broker the last time he had the boat out, he could only get the engines up to 3100 at WOT. I'm assuming cruise range should be around there (or maybe a little higher). The boat is due for bottom cleaning, but aside from a dirty bottom, what could be causing that? Are there any sites w/ reference material for these boats? The Carver site had some brochures and specs for older models, but not a ton of info.
Thanks.
Steve

Heh Steve.......there are any number of things, wrong props to bad fuel to tune ups, .....on salt though first guess is bottom cleaning .
If this is the same boat you have been asking about, sounds very much like it may not have been kept up lately....you got mould, leaks, bad smells, now the rpm thing.....are you working with your own broker or surveyor to help protect you here ? Good luck man and be careful.

To add......IMO any sea trial would have to be done after the bottom has been verified clean so a proper estimate of performance could be made. Remember this is my opinion here.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't realize bottom cleaning could make that much of a difference. Given that it's not a new boat (by a long shot), I would assume the owner would have worked out what props to run. If we get serious enough about this boat to make an offer, it would be contingent on a survey and probably mechanical inspection. We're not working with a broker at this point because it seems pretty easy to find boats that are listed for sale on the web.

RPM's at WOT should be around 4500.

Wow. Thanks for the reply. Are there certain reference sources that you use for this kind of info on Carver boats on the web?

It's the engine manuf that has the recommended specs on wot not carver. You can google the engine manufacturer crusader and t h e model 5.7 mpi and get this info. Carver does have online info for the boat by year on their website

If the Boat is in salt, brackish water, a dirty bottom, especially barnacles can keep
A good running boat from even getting up on plane.
Buying a boat involves a survey which should include a haul out to determine the condition of the bottom. If dirty, it needs to be cleaned. With a clean bottom, if the boat can’t get up to speed and specified RPM’s, now you know you have other issues...not a dirty bottom.

I have 5.7's in my 3007 aft cabin. Mine is an 81 so the specs may have changed since then. Mine max out at 4000 RPM. I do have the engine manuals that came with my boat and that's what they say too, 4000 RPM. Both of my engines do hit that setting. Who knows what may have changed between 1981 and 1999.
