Proper Impeller kit? 454 Crusader V-pulley

Is this guy right?

Just making sure. I thought I had a Jabsco pump, but the pump says Sherwood, Detroit, MI cast into the housing. The impeller is a 12 rib impeller, and it's approximately 1.75" wide (not the diameter). Pump looks good inside, but the cover that you take off to remove the impeller has some decent grooves worn into it. I've rebuilt dozens of Mercs, this is my first Sherwood.

That looks like the same one that I've used, and I've got 1983 Crusader 454s with Sherwood E-35 pumps. You can look up the E-35 and make sure it looks like yours to be sure. My impeller is Sherwood 10615, which is listed in the "compatible" section of that link.

On the back plate, you can sand and polish that. Just put some 150 grit on a plate of glass or really flat surface and 'grind' the backplate on it, then move up to a finer grit (220, 400, etc) and I finish with a scotchbrite pad. It should be pretty shiny when you're done or it will be abrasive and wear out the impeller quicker.

I just rebuilt my pumps - bearings, seals and all. We'll see if it makes a difference after I launch. They had ~1200 hrs on them.

Thanks KM, great advice on the back cover. The Merc pumps have a wear plate that you scrap and replace. This one here has about a .200" brass plate. I'm sure some sandpaper will clean it up nicely. How do you tell the model of a sherwood pump? I looked all over, but don't see anything stamped on the pump. I'll take the impeller up to W. Marine and match it up. They price match Amazon.

The E-35 is a very common raw water pump. A lot of parts out there.

Just look at the pictures... they're pretty distinctive. The in/out adapters might be a little different depending on your installation (and different port/starboard if you have rev rotation engine) but the pump body will look the same as any other E-35 and different than their other models.

btw... WM also matches Walmart, so check the prices there too.

FWIW, West Marine (at least the one by me) stopped price matching Amazon and Wallmart, unless the product is shipped and fulfilled by Wallmart and Amazon. It's going to cost them a lot of business, IMO. I asked them to price match the $37 that the Seirra kit was listed for on Amazon, and they said that they wouldn't, because it was shipped and fulfilled by "Boating Accessories," a private seller on Amazon.

The Sierra equivalent kit wasn't exactly right. The impeller was right, but the gaskets were wrong. None of the 4 gaskets in the Sierra kit matched my pump. I was also concerned that the Sierra impeller had two grooves in the face of the impeller, that allowed water into the shaft. Could cool the shaft and possibly lubricate the face, and aid with friction, but I'd rathe keep my pump factory, and not have water into the shaft, inviting rust, corrosion, and leaks.

I'm hoping West Marine takes this Sierra kit back, even though I opened it. I'll be pissed if they don't. I ordered the factory Sherwood 10615K replacement kit from a Seller on Ebay. The Seller is a marina based out of Illinois. Could have got it for $18 shipped from China, but I wouldn't trust the cooling system on my boat to a Chinese part, even though the Sherwood OEM part is likely made in China. Supposed to be here Friday. About 1/2 the price through E-bay. $52 at West Marine, $29 through Ebay, OEM, Sherwood part.

The gasket pictured looks more like mine, fingers crossed.

The shaft and internal parts are stainless or bronze, so there's no risk of corrosion. The whole internal section is filled with water anyways. Even the rear bearing is fill of water. There is a mechanical seal that separates the water section from the front bearing. The kits I get always have several gaskets. Only one matches my E-35 pump, but a couple are close. They just have the section for the cam in a different place. They probably could be used in an emergency, but I'd use the right gasket for the right application for normal maintenance.

I'm surprised to hear that. My bearing seems to be ferrous metal, as is the c-clip. The factory design would seemingly disallow water to the center shaft. Either way, happy to have two factory impeller kits on their way.

Front bearing or rear bushing? The front bearing is a normal bearing, and that front C clip is a standard steel. These are isolated from the water section by the mechanical seal right behind it. If you look at the bottom, there are drain holes just behind the front bearing, so if the mechanical seal is bad or leaking, then water will leak out those holes and not build up behind the bearing.

The original bushing that's pushed into the rear cover) was some type of pressed graphite.. it will break up easily. That's how I removed the original as I didn't have a puller for it. Just broke it up with a tiny chisel. The new bushing that replaced it is a bronze bushing with impregnated nylon (or Teflon) nubs built in. In my earlier post, I referred to this a a bearing, but it is really a bushing and this is the one that will fill with water, not the front one.

If by front bearing, you mean the bearing by the pulley, that isn't what I was referring to. I meant the first bearing from the impeller, which I'm gathering is referred to as the rear bearing from your post. That bearing is mild steel, as is the C-clip, at least on my application. There is no seal between the bearing and the impeller on my application, aside from the impeller itself, or at least there wasn't when I took mine apart. I'm wondering if I have a slightly different pump than the E-35 pump?...

The West Marine rebuild kit came with about 4-5 gaskets, none of which lined up with my pump. The Sherwood kit came with an impeller, one gasket, new screws, and a new keyway. The impeller that came with the Sherwood kit was an exact match, right down to the numbers on my old impeller, but the screws were much larger, and the gasket didn't line up at all. Bottom pic shows the Sherwood gasket best fit, and larger screws, top pic shows the inside of the housing.
