Replacing fuel filters on Santego 3467, Crusaders

Hi all,
I'm going the change all of the fuel/water separator elements. I have Crusader 454s with the separators mounted low on the engines. There are no fuel shut off valves on the gas tanks or fuel lines. Do I trust the anti-siphon valves to work or would you disconnect the fuel hoses from the tanks before removing the filters? I rather not mess with the fuel lines if I don't have to.
The generator filter is mounted high up so I don't have to worry about siphoning at that point.

As long as your engines are not running and the fuel pump, there is no issue with removing your fuel filters. The fuel will not flow. Place a rag or small container under them if you can, in the event you spill fuel from the filter it self.
If you had diesels then that would be a different story and you would have to shut the fuel line off.

I agree....not a bad idea to use a zip lock bag around the filter and cloth to catch fuel and adding some fresh fuel to the new filter before screwing back on is not a bad idea.....a little oil on the gasket as well....make sure the old gasket comes off with the old filter....clean up good, remove any fuel soaked clean up cloths from the bilge area and ventilate well before starting.

Thanks guys! I’m 1 year into this boat and still going through everything. Engines are running nicely at about 1100 hrs.

I agree with the guys above. You may get some fuel initially but it should stop. If it continues to run for a long time, you may have an anti-siphon valve failure. The most you should get is what's in the fuel line. Have everything ready to go; lube the gasket in the new filter, rags, container, etc. before you remove the old filter. Turn your blowers on. Oh, and no smoking

And when you're doing maintenance is a GREAT time to find out if that's an issue, because you can address it before it's a PROBLEM.

For me the only sure definitive way to check an anti-siphon valve would be to remove it and inspect.....too many variables otherwise....

But if it's flowing when it shouldn't then you know you have to investigate it.

I totally agree, that is the way it would appear.......on the other hand if there is no flow is that the valve working or just the way the hoses etc are run.....also how much would run out.....in my mind if there is a block of any kind the fuel should not drop out......to remove that valve is easy and cheap to replace.

Symptoms of a blocked Anti-Siphon Valve. I was travelling across Georgian Bay a few years back with a friend in his 350 Carver. We were travelling on plane and one of his engines would fail and his RPM’s would drop to 1400 RPM’s from 3200, and then would remain there. We removed his fuel filter and replaced it, made no difference.
While we were in Little Current he had a mechanic come on the boat and it was determined that the culprit was a blocked Anti-Siphon Valve. The mechanic was able to clear up the valve and the problem went away and yet to return.
This may not be the only symptom of a blocked Anti-Siphon Valve, but is one of them for sure. So it would appear to me that a blocked Anti-Siphon Valve would have a tendency to prevent fuel flow.
