Hi Everyone

I have to change a starter on a 1990 crusader 454 7.4l starboard side

No numbers on starter to match up.

I have found starters that will fit...How do I know if it needs to be Counter Clockwise Rotation or clockwise
rotation?

Thanks

Steve

If you can bump the starter and watch each motor, you may find they both turn the same way (left hand is standard). You might also talk to Arley, a super helpful Crusader distributor.

For that vintage, chances are one of your engines is a counter-rotator. In a straight shaft application it's typically on the starboard side. In a v-drive application, it could be port or starboard depending on whether it's output rotation is opposite to it's input.

If you still have the engine tags on them you can decode it and it will tell you if it's Standard or Reverse.

You can also look at the timing marks on the engine to determine if they are counter-rotating or not.

Check the firing order around the dizzy cap.........standard 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2...counter rotate 1,2,7,5,6,3,4,8....
