Squeaking transmission / vdrives. 96 santego 380

I hit an object in the water on the 4th of July… someone must have thrown a chair overboard or something. I returned to the marina at idle there wasn’t any significant vibration, but I knew I had some damage. I did. Both props damaged but not too bad. Port side prop shaft bearing is shot, but shaft is good.

BUT - I have this new noise!

Do you think it’s an alignment issue??
Help please- Thank you [image][image][image][/image][/image][/image]

When you say the "prop shaft bearing" is bad, is that the cutlass bearing? I wonder if that sound is being transmitted through the shaft from the bearing and just "showing up" inside the engine compartment?

I would have bet $$$ that it isn’t. The sound seems obvious to me it’s in the back of transmission by Ujoint… BUT from what I have read online many people say the same thing but it ends up being exactly what you said. I had a diver inspect , remove and repair props and they will get installed tomorrow.. He said that the cutlass bearing was damaged and he could recreate the noise underwater .. note the noise is present with or without the props installed.. next I will be hauling it out to investigate further and replace that bearing. The reason I’m asking is because I am throwing a party on the lake for my wife’s 50th and I’m considering using the boat (at idle speed only ) and pulling it afterwards on August 5th … but I don’t want to do further damage

Ya cutlas bearing noise can transmit through to the drive train. You can also get squeaking from the shaft log. I would also check your u-joints for play and also consider that the noise may also be from the Walter V drive which I suspect you have. Did you also check the oil in both the transmission and V drive for level and condition? Was the shaft dialed?

Congrats to your wife on her 50th

Yes, I have been all over all that you mentioned I think my next move will be to check and reset alignment ... What do you mean when you say "dialed"

Rotating the shaft with a dial/gauge at key locations to check and see if it's true along its length. You can't tell by just looking at the shaft under water, it must be dialed to be sure. You only have about .003" to play with in an alignment so if your shaft is out by the slightest amount, you'll never achieve that spec.
