Exhaust dampers / flappers

Has anyone ever had to service the exhaust dampers / flappers? ie: the things that keep water backing up the exhaust hose. I did not know there were any on Carvers until I read mention of them somewhere. I figured because they exhaust out the sides they had eliminated the need for them.

In any case mine are making an annoying racket. Sounds like a metal plate is loose and flopping around making a clinking, clanking noise. Has anyone ever seen or replaced these....0r possibly have pictures of what they look like. It sounds like the flappers are inside a separate short hose coupler that attaches to the fiberglass mufflers.

Many thanks for any knowledge you could pass along.

Just in case someone is interested, I threaded a bore scope down the exhaust hose until it reached the elusive damper / flapper thing. Strange why this part is not better documented given it is a high wear item subject to severe stresses. I wonder how many Carvers have had engines destroyed due to hydrostatic lock when these hidden flappers fail.

In any case it turns out to be a brass sleeve inserted in the exhaust line before the muffler but after the Y where the port & starboard exhaust lines meet. The flapper itself is a round metal plate which swings up and down on pivots within the sleeve to block sea water from flowing back toward the engine. (The flapper plate is weighted across the bottom to keep it in the closed position until the motor is started)

In my case it appears one of the pivot points is rotted or worn away causing it to flop around within the sleeve but I could not get good pics of these pivots. I attached a couple of pics.

Cheers, all
