It's basically an over the road tax here in NY. Farm fuel here is also red dyed and not taxed. Canada tax must be different or they have none.

We have the same tax setup here in WA.

Because the taxes are to maintain the roads, which boats don't typically use, especially diesel boats.

Pardon my ignorance on this, never had a diesel boat......now would that fuel be cheaper at the marina , is it a different fuel than the road stuff, other than the dye ?

In Canada, dyed diesel is generally used for farming services as it is sold at a lower tax rate than roadside or marine diesel. Technically, a person could be fined for using dyed diesel in anything other than farm equipment.

So they tax all diesel in Canada unless it's for agriculture use.
On another note, what have you ever seen cheaper at a marina when it comes to fuel. It's the same stuff they sell at the gas station down the road.
I wholesaled fuels years ago and can tell you that markups are all what the market will bear. However on a marina's defense the cost of liability insurance for being able to sell fuel on the water can't be cheap.

Insurance at a marina for carrying fuel is the killer. I've seen marinas stop selling fuel because of it. Between that and environmental hurtles, it's a wonder any marina carries fuel.
