Volvo Penta Diesel corrosion help, please...

Most of my motor looks good, except this (pictured). I know corrosion means leakage, so I should probably open it, wire brush it clean, and replace the seals.
Question: I'm a decent DIYer, is opening, wire brushing and replacing bad seals a DIY job, or could I destroy something? Is there a kit of seals that come prepacked for this area? Thank you for any help.

Why not clean up the outside then see if it is still seeping there.....I would not use a wire brush on a gasket mating surface.....there are 3m disc pads that fit on your drill for just such a purpose and a flat block with emery cloth, a scraper in there may be just enough.....that is just me.
I cant really say exactly about that part you are showing there, but famous last words " it looks like a simple job".

The condition of the mating surfaces will dictate how this job will go. Prolonged leaking and corrosion can destroy the surfaces enough where even new engineered gaskets won't work and the seal must be accomplished by other means.
If you provide engine information, I can look up parts for you. Post the model, spec number and serial number.

3M disk pads ordered, thanks for the suggestion. I thought the number on top would do it, but I know the number you're referring to. It is a 1983 Diesel Volvo Penta TAMD 60B. I'll post number when I'm back at the boat.

The reason I mentioned clean the outside and watch ...... look close at the seam there you can see black sealant squishing out and the fasteners have been opened leading me to think someone has been in there already. Who's to say when though, unless you have seen an ongoing leak now.
Oh and if you do take it apart be aware to tighten the fasteners down carefully in a pattern so as not to warp the plate.......perhaps the manual has such an instruction.

+1 Bud. I suspect a sealant is likely what will have to be used in this case. They either used it before because of the condition of the surfaces or they just didn't want to pay Volvo pricing!
