I believe what happens is that the tranny clutches start to slip. When they slip, they build up heat and either warp the clutches or fuse then together with heat. I'm wondering if you have a trans fluid temp alarm if this would have gone off well before damage happened.

When I got my boat, the trans wouldn't shift until the RPMs were raised over idle. It seemed to run fine otherwise. When I pulled it out for the winter project, I found that ALL the O-rings in the tranny had melted. Apparently at some point (in the PO history), the tranny dipstick had popped out and it 'burped' fluid out until there wasn't quite enough for the trans to build pressure, so it started slipping and heating up. When I got the boat it was full of clean fluid but that annoying 'above-idle' issue. When I got the trans apart, there was a big blob of rubber in the bottom of the case.

To help remove my trans, I built a little gantry crane with some old 2x4's and used a block and tackle that would hold 200lbs to take most of the weight so I could handle the rest. Mine also had a reduction gear attached to make it heavier.

Same boat here, blew a port transmission at the beginning of this last summer. Velvet drivers.
Yes, this call all be done with the engine in place. Need to remove the heat exchange and possibly the riser/elbow, block engine. There are 2 longer studs on the bottom to help guide on and off. just be careful to not bend these.

2 guys and a dock line fashioned into a sling and we lifted it straight off and right on out. The shaft just slides off all the way back till it stops on the rudder.

I used Midwest Marine Services and I highly recommend them. $595 plus shipping for a complete rebuild, mine came back looking almost new. If you use him, mention my name and I get 100 off my starboard rebuild I'm doing this winter lol, but that is not why I'm recommending him. Capt Alan is his name. I can provide more info if your interested.

Yes if you could please provide the information for mid west marine services a phone number or something like that would be awesome I’m having the same issues with my transmission and it’s already been rebuilt ones last year
